Project Description

In fall of 2018 a new K-8 school will open to relieve overcrowding at Albemarle Road Elementary and Windsor Park Elementary. This school will offer a Dual Language Spanish magnet program. This new school will feed to Independence High School.

How will this impact home school assignments for the 2018-19 school year?

Home school assignments will change for students who live in the portion of the Windsor Park Elementary attendance area south of the Eastland Mall property line and the portion of the Albemarle Road Elementary attendance area north of Albemarle Road and west of Regal Oaks Drive.

  • Students who will be in Kindergarten through 4th grade will be assigned to the new Albemarle Road Relief School. Assignments for 5th graders will not change.
  • Students who will enter 6th grade will be assigned to Albemarle Road Relief instead of Eastway Middle or Albemarle Road Middle. Assignments for 7th and 8th graders will not change.
  • 9th and 10th graders will be assigned to Independence High (instead of Garringer High). Assignments for 11th and 12th graders will not change.

How will this impact magnet programs?

  • The program will be available to students in kindergarten and 1st grade in 2018. One grade will be added each year up to eighth grade.
  • All students living in the attendance area for the Albemarle Road Relief School will participate in the magnet program once it is available for their grade level.
  • Transportation and priority in the lottery will be given to students from the Green Transportation Zone.
  • Students in the Green Zone will no longer be eligible to enter Collinswood Language Academy with transportation provided.
    • Current Collinswood students will be able to stay at Collinswood with transportation provided.
    • Siblings of current students will have guaranteed admission to Collinswood. However, transportation will not be provided for siblings once older siblings leave Collinswood.
  • Students assigned through the lottery will have guaranteed continuation to the World Languages program at South Mecklenburg High.
